in virginia, the governor has also declared a state of emergency. residents and visit iters have been ordered to leave hatteras on the outer banks. >> certainly a formidable hurricane. maximum winds have increased 145 miles per hour, gusted to about 170. it continues to intensify and deepen. i don't think it will get much stronger than this but this is a very powerful storm. thank goodness, it won't directly make landfall. we'll talk first about current conditioned. i mentioned to you it is trekking off to the north and northwest at about 17 miles per hour. now, centered 410 miles south of cape hatteras, north carolina. it looks like it will be right off the the coastline there of north carolina a little later tonight. we'll gradually see conditions deteriorate there. want to push onto hd radar, show you the wave heights. this is very impressive stuff. see the dark purple. that is right underneath the storm. wave heights are measured at about 33 feet. so that gives you an idea of how powerful the storm is even pushing up towards cape hatteras. wave heights are running a good 10 to 12 feet abo

as you head on the inner loop from virginia into montgomery county. can you see there is some accident activity there in the center of your screen. it is off to the left side of the road and not causing any problems for you if you are headed up towards the bethesda area. heading from maryland into virginia on the outer loop to the right of your screen not affected, no travel lanes blocked and effect is running just fine. wide open there. 95 in virginia, southbound, same story, we've got an accident just south of this scene, south of lorton right before route one in woodbridge. it is off to the right shoulder and you can see not causing a problem here. northbound 95 looks great in fredericksburg all the way up to springfield. vut host lanes pointed north but the restricts are lifted as is the case on all of our highways except for route 50, the john hanson highway. let's look at video we have an earlier accident, veil road at center ridge drive. this is a serious wreck early this morning of his there was an arrest in this accident. there was also some injuries. we had police police on t

with maryland license plates. >>> also making headlines being homes in a virginia subdivision reduced to rubble. now, firefighters want to know what started this massive fire in manassas. as many as 16 people have been forced from their homes because of this fire. the fire broke out around 3:30 yesterday afternoon along tillot loop. one woman was taken to the hospital from just the shock of seeing her home burned to the ground. it took firefighters an hour and a half to bring that blaze under control. they believe the fire started in the middle house and then quickly spread in both directions from there. now, again, three homes were destroyed. five others were damaged. and the red cross is helping displaced families find temporary shelter. still no word on what started a fire that killed a virginia mother and two of her children. ally anderson saved three of her children as her lorton town home burned on wednesday. she managed to lower them out a window down to their uncle but then she went back to get her youngest sons but neither she nor her sons made it out. neighbors tried to help out but c

in the district. dulles airport, 65 degrees. fredericksburg, virginia is at 69 degrees at this hour. here is a look at the satellite- radar. we remain cloud-free for the most part. there might be a couple of clouds here and there as you look towards the western skies. we are cloud-free and we are going to see a lot of sunshine again today. you see the rainfall up to the north and west. that is a frontal boundary that will get through here eventually and could trigger some showers and thunderstorms late today and during the evening hours as well. so we'll keep an eye on that. here is your forecast then for today. lots of sunshine. high today about 90 degrees and again, that chance of a shower or thunderstorm during the evening and late afternoon and evening hours tonight. so there you go. more on that coming up in just a little bit. >> hopefully, that afternoon thunderstorm, if it does hit, doesn't mess with afternoon traffic. but this morning, we are looking pretty good out there on the roadways. julie wright, what is the latest? >> i think you just jinxed us. >> i probably did. >> in pro
